What to Expect at Your First Spravato Visit in Valencia
If you've tried several antidepressants and still struggle with depression, your doctor may suggest Spravato® (esketamine). Treatment works differently from taking a daily pill, so it helps to know what a visit looks like. Here is what to expect at Healthy Mind Psychiatry in Valencia.
What is Spravato?
Spravato is a prescription nasal spray FDA-approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression. It works on the brain's glutamate system, which is different from how most antidepressant pills work.
Before you come in ?
Plan to have someone drive you home, because Spravato can temporarily affect coordination and alertness. Don't eat for two hours before your visit, and don't drink liquids for 30 minutes before. We will review your medical history first to make sure Spravato is safe for you.
During your visit?
Spravato is given only in our office, a REMS-certified treatment center, because it is part of a restricted safety program. Our team checks your blood pressure before your dose. You then use the nasal spray yourself while our team stays nearby. Depending on your dose, you will use one or more devices, with a short rest between each.
Afterward, we monitor you for at least two hours and check your blood pressure again. You may feel sleepy, dizzy, or a little disconnected from your surroundings. These effects usually fade within a few hours. You should not drive or operate machinery until the next day, after a good night's sleep.
How often will I need treatment?
Most patients start with two sessions a week for the first four weeks. After that, treatment is once a week for four weeks, and then once a week or every other week, depending on how you're doing. Results vary from person to person.
Insurance
We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medi-Cal, and we check your benefits before you begin.
