What is IV ketamine therapy?

IV ketamine therapy delivers a low dose of ketamine directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous infusion. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which act on serotonin or norepinephrine, ketamine works on the brain’s NMDA receptors and glutamate system, which are involved in forming and strengthening connections between brain cells.

Ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic. Its use for depression and other mental health conditions is off-label, meaning it is prescribed based on clinical research and medical judgment rather than a specific FDA approval. Some people notice a change in mood within hours to days, while antidepressants usually take weeks. Everyone responds differently, and results vary.

Who may be a candidate for IV ketamine?

Your provider may discuss IV ketamine if you:

• Have treatment-resistant depression, meaning you have tried two or more antidepressants without enough improvement
• Have severe anxiety or PTSD symptoms that limit your quality of life
• Need a faster-acting option because of the severity of your symptoms

A full evaluation is required first. IV ketamine is not right for everyone, and your provider will review your medical history, current medications and other treatment options, including Spravato and TMS, before recommending it.

What can I expect during an infusion?

Your comfort and safety come first. You will be seated in a private, quiet room in a comfortable chair or recliner. A small IV line is placed in your arm, and the infusion runs for about 40 to 60 minutes. Many people feel relaxed, and some experience mild dissociation, dream-like sensations or changes in perception. These effects usually fade within an hour after treatment. Our team monitors your vital signs and how you are feeling throughout the session. You will need someone to drive you home afterward.

How often will I need IV ketamine?

A typical course begins with a series of six infusions over two to three weeks. After that, you and your provider will decide whether maintenance infusions are needed and how often, based on how long your benefits last.

Is IV ketamine safe?

When given by trained professionals in a medical setting with monitoring, IV ketamine is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include nausea, dizziness, a temporary rise in blood pressure, and short-lived changes in perception. Cost and insurance

IV ketamine is not covered by most insurance plans and is a self-pay treatment. Our office will explain the cost before you begin. Spravato (esketamine), a related FDA-approved treatment for treatment-resistant depression, is covered by most insurance plans and may be an alternative.
