Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Valencia and Santa Clarita

What are common child and adolescent psychiatric issues?
Childhood and the teen years can be a difficult time, and it is common for young people to have changes in their mood and behavior. These changes can come from hormonal changes in puberty, relationships with family and peers, stress at school, and their environment. Your child may also be struggling with an undiagnosed condition such as:

  • Anxiety: An anxiety disorder can cause intense, persistent worry or fear about everyday events or situations. These worries are difficult to control and can interfere with your child's quality of life.
  • Depression: Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and guilt. It affects how your child behaves, feels, and thinks, and it can increase the risk of self-harm or suicide.
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): ADHD is a mental health condition that makes it difficult to concentrate and stay focused. It can also cause impulsive behavior that disrupts life at home, at school, and in social situations.
  • Substance use: Teens may start using drugs or alcohol because of peer pressure or to self-medicate anxiety and depression.

When should I seek psychiatric help for my child?
Consider scheduling a consultation at Healthy Mind Psychiatry if you notice changes in your child's behavior at home, such as:

  • Violence or defiance
  • Persistent anger
  • Running away
  • Drug or alcohol use
  • Changes in appetite or not eating
  • Cutting or other forms of self-harm
  • Loss of interest in usual activities
You should also seek help if your child is performing poorly in school or getting into trouble because of their behavior.

What treatments are available?
Our providers customize each treatment plan to your child's condition, biology, and social life. Your child's plan may include:

  • Medication management: Medications are available to treat symptoms of depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Our team monitors your child's response and side effects and adjusts the plan as needed.
  • TMS therapy: For adolescents ages 15 and older with depression that has not improved with other treatments, TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a non-drug option available at our office.
  • Lifestyle changes: Healthy habits, such as better diet, sleep, and routines, can complement medication.
