What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD or DO) who complete medical school and four years of residency training. They have a deep understanding of physical and mental health and how the two affect each other.

When should you see a psychiatrist?

The most common reasons to see a psychiatrist include:

• Manic episodes
• Hearing voices or hallucinating

Mental health episodes may happen randomly, infrequently or constantly. If they are affecting your quality of life, that is a clear sign to seek help. Your primary care provider may refer you to a psychiatrist, but you can usually come directly to us for a diagnosis and treatment plan, and most insurances cover the visit.
