What is esketamine nasal ketamine?

Esketamine is a prescription nasal spray derived from ketamine, a medication known for its rapid-acting antidepressant effects. It targets the glutamate system, which plays a crucial role in forming new neural connections—something that’s often impaired in people with depression. Unlike traditional antidepressants that may take weeks to work, esketamine can begin improving symptoms within hours to days.

Why should I consider esketamine therapy?

Dr. Sreepathi may recommend esketamine if you:

  • Have tried at least two other antidepressant medications without adequate relief
  • Experience ongoing symptoms that disrupt your daily life
  • Need a fast-acting treatment due to the severity of your depression
  • Want an option that works differently from standard medications

Esketamine has also shown benefits for individuals with suicidal thoughts, offering a potential lifeline during acute mental health crises.

What can I expect during treatment?

Esketamine therapy is always performed in-office under careful supervision. You’ll self-administer the nasal spray under Dr. Sreepathi’s guidance. After dosing, you’ll rest in a quiet, comfortable room for about two hours while your blood pressure, heart rate, and overall condition are monitored.

You may experience mild dissociation, dizziness, or changes in perception, which generally resolve before you leave. Because esketamine can temporarily affect coordination and alertness, you’ll need someone to drive you home.

How often will I need treatment?

Most patients start with two sessions per week for four weeks. After this induction phase, sessions are reduced to once weekly, and eventually to maintenance treatments every two to four weeks, depending on your needs.

Is esketamine safe?

Esketamine is FDA-approved and administered only in certified treatment centers. Healthy Mind Psychiatry follows strict safety protocols, and your treatment plan will be tailored to your medical history and goals.

If you’ve felt hopeless after trying multiple medications, esketamine may offer new hope. Dr. Sreepathi provides compassionate, evidence-based care to help you find relief and improve your quality of life. To learn more, call the office or request an appointment online.
