Seasonal Depression: Why It Starts in the Fall and When to Get Help

Seasonal depression: why it starts in the fall and when to get help

As fall arrives and the days get shorter, many people notice a change in their mood and energy. For some, it is a mild dip. For others, it is seasonal depression, a type of major depression that comes back at the same time each year, usually starting in the fall or winter and improving in spring.

Common signs:

People with seasonal depression may feel sad or down most of the day, nearly every day. They may lose interest in things they usually enjoy, feel tired even after sleeping, or sleep much more than usual. Some crave carbohydrates and gain weight, have trouble concentrating, pull away from friends and family, or feel hopeless or worthless.

Why it happens :
Less daylight can affect the body's internal clock and the brain chemicals that help control mood and sleep. Researchers are still learning why some people are affected more than others. Even in Southern California, some people notice these changes.

What can help
Seasonal depression is treatable. Options may include spending time outdoors in the morning light, light therapy, regular exercise, a steady sleep schedule, talk therapy, and medication when appropriate. If depression has not improved with usual treatment, a psychiatrist may talk with you about other options, such as TMS or Spravato.

When to get help
Talk to a doctor if your symptoms last more than two weeks, make it hard to work or take care of your family, or keep coming back each year. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 right away, or call 911 in an emergency.

Everyone responds differently, and results vary. If you live in Valencia, Santa Clarita, or the surrounding area, contact Healthy Mind Psychiatry to schedule an appointment.
